Encouraging the perceptual underdog: positive affective priming of nonpreferred local–global processes
Two experiments examined affective priming of global and local perception. Participants attempted to detect a target that might be present as either a global or a local shape. Verbal primes were used in 1 experiment, and pictorial primes were used in the other. In both experiments, positive primes led to improved performance on the nonpreferred dimension. For participants exhibiting global precedence, detection of local targets was significantly improved, whereas for participants exhibiting local precedence, detection of global targets was significantly improved. The results provide support for an interpretation of the effects of positive affective priming in terms of increased perceptual flexibility
Macroclimate and viticultural zoning in Europe: observed trends and atmospheric forcing
Temperature and precipitation are major forcing factors influencing grapevine phenology and yield, as well as wine quality. Bioclimatic indices describing the suitability of a particular region for wine production are a commonly used tool for viticultural zoning. For this research these indices were computed for Europe by using the E-OBS gridded daily temperature and precipitation data set for the period from 1950 to 2009. Results showed strong regional contrasts based on the different index patterns and reproduced the wide diversity of local conditions that largely explain the quality and diversity of grapevines being grown across Europe. Owing to the strong inter-annual variability in the indices, a trend analysis and a principal component analysis were applied together with an assessment of their mean patterns. Significant trends were identified in the Winkler and Huglin indices, particularly for southwestern Europe. Four statistically significant orthogonal modes of variability were isolated for the Huglin index (HI), jointly representing 82% of the total variance in Europe. The leading mode was largely dominant (48% of variance) and mainly reflected the observed historical long-term changes. The other 3 modes corresponded to regional dipoles within Europe. Despite the relevance of local and regional climatic characteristics to grapevines, it was demonstrated via canonical correlation analysis that the observed inter-annual variability of the HI was strongly controlled by the large-scale atmospheric circulation during the growing season (April to September)
High-energy gamma-ray emission from the inner jet of LS I+61 303: the hadronic contribution revisited
LS I+61 303 has been detected by the Cherenkov telescope MAGIC at very high
energies, presenting a variable flux along the orbital motion with a maximum
clearly separated from the periastron passage. In the light of the new
observational constraints, we revisit the discussion of the production of
high-energy gamma rays from particle interactions in the inner jet of this
system. The hadronic contribution could represent a major fraction of the TeV
emission detected from this source. The spectral energy distribution resulting
from p-p interactions is recalculated. Opacity effects introduced by the photon
fields of the primary star and the stellar decretion disk are shown to be
essential in shaping the high-energy gamma-ray light curve at energies close to
200 GeV. We also present results of Monte Carlo simulations of the
electromagnetic cascades developed very close to the periastron passage. We
conclude that a hadronic microquasar model for the gamma-ray emission in LS I
+61 303 can reproduce the main features of its observed high-energy gamma-ray

The relative importance of factors predicting outcome for myeloma patients at different ages: results from 3894 patients in the Myeloma XI trial.
Disease factors such as tumor burden and molecular risk affect myeloma patient outcomes as well as patient factors that impact the capacity to deliver treatment. How the relative importance of these factors changes with patient age has not previously been investigated comprehensively. We analyzed data from 3894 patients of all ages uniformly treated in a large clinical trial of myeloma patients, Myeloma XI. Even with novel therapeutic approaches progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) are affected by age with a stepwise reduction in PFS and OS with each decade increase. Renal function deteriorated with increasing age whilst the frequency of t(4;14) and del(17p) decreased and gain(1q) increased. The relative contribution of performance status, international staging score and molecular risk to progression-free and overall survival varied by age group. Molecular events have a larger effect on outcome in younger patients with their relative contribution diminishing in the elderly. Performance status is important for patient outcome at all ages suggesting that physical frailty may be a more important predictor of outcome than age itself. Significant differences in the factors driving patient outcomes at different ages are important to consider as we design disease segmentation strategies to deliver personalized treatment approaches
S-branes and (Anti-)Bubbles in (A)dS Space
We describe the construction of new locally asymptotically (A)dS geometries
with relevance for the AdS/CFT and dS/CFT correspondences. Our approach is to
obtain new solutions by analytically continuing black hole solutions. A basic
consideration of the method of continuation indicates that these solutions come
in three classes: S-branes, bubbles and anti-bubbles. A generalization to
spinning or twisted solutions can yield spacetimes with complicated horizon

Catalog of Radio Galaxies with z>0.3. I:Construction of the Sample
The procedure of the construction of a sample of distant () radio
galaxies using NED, SDSS, and CATS databases for further application in
statistical tests is described. The sample is assumed to be cleaned from
objects with quasar properties. Primary statistical analysis of the list is
performed and the regression dependence of the spectral index on redshift is

The r-modes in accreting neutron stars with magneto-viscous boundary layers
We explore the dynamics of the r-modes in accreting neutron stars in two
ways. First, we explore how dissipation in the magneto-viscous boundary layer
(MVBL) at the crust-core interface governs the damping of r-mode perturbations
in the fluid interior. Two models are considered: one assuming an
ordinary-fluid interior, the other taking the core to consist of superfluid
neutrons, type II superconducting protons, and normal electrons. We show,
within our approximations, that no solution to the magnetohydrodynamic
equations exists in the superfluid model when both the neutron and proton
vortices are pinned. However, if just one species of vortex is pinned, we can
find solutions. When the neutron vortices are pinned and the proton vortices
are unpinned there is much more dissipation than in the ordinary-fluid model,
unless the pinning is weak. When the proton vortices are pinned and the neutron
vortices are unpinned the dissipation is comparable or slightly less than that
for the ordinary-fluid model, even when the pinning is strong. We also find in
the superfluid model that relatively weak radial magnetic fields ~ 10^9 G (10^8
K / T)^2 greatly affect the MVBL, though the effects of mutual friction tend to
counteract the magnetic effects. Second, we evolve our two models in time,
accounting for accretion, and explore how the magnetic field strength, the
r-mode saturation amplitude, and the accretion rate affect the cyclic evolution
of these stars. If the r-modes control the spin cycles of accreting neutron
stars we find that magnetic fields can affect the clustering of the spin
frequencies of low mass x-ray binaries (LMXBs) and the fraction of these that

A Radio Survey of Seven Southern X-ray Luminous Clusters of Galaxies
The Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) has been used at 1.38 and 2.38
GHz to survey seven southern Abell clusters of galaxies with high X-ray
luminosities: A2746, A2837, A3126, A3216, A3230, A3827 and A3836. The clusters
have also been surveyed at 0.843 GHz with the Molonglo Observatory Synthesis
Telescope (MOST). We have listed a complete 1.38-GHz sample of 149 radio
sources within the Abell circles centred on their X-ray centroids. We compare
their identification fractions, emitted 1.38-GHz and optical powers, radio
spectral indices and radial variation in projected source density with those of
the radio-selected samples of Slee et al. (1998). We compare our fractional
radio luminosity function with that of the radio-selected samples of Ledlow and
Owen (1996) and Slee et al. (1998). Three significant differences are noted
between X-ray and radio-selected samples of clusters; (1) the X-ray sample has
an excess of flat-spectrum radio sources; (2) the fractional radio luminosity
function for the FR I sources in the X-ray selected sample is much steeper,
implying that fewer of their cluster galaxies become hosts for the stronger FR
I radio galaxies; (3) a complete absence of FR II radio galaxies in the X-ray
selected sample. The average excess projected density of radio sources near our
